For the Leadwerks Corporation, we are implementing in early 2010 a tech demo. The aims of such technology demonstrations are to display functionality, scalability and visual possibilities of the 3D engine. A 3D engine is basically structured with thousands of lines of code and no graphics so the potential of this 3D graphics engine to outsiders is not obvious at first. This is where companies like Pure3d Visualizations drop in and delivers AAA content for the code framework.
Our task was to deliver a visually appealing 3D visualization which was shown at the Games Developer Conference 2010 (GDC 2010), in a "keynote" to the audience and various investors.
We opted for an alpine landscape with a wide field of vision and realistic background to give the impression of depth. The user should get out of a narrow valley to the open area and from there explore certain points of interest. We continued making use of existing vegetation of our 3D catalogue.
Using our strong network of freelance artists, we ordered animated animals to breath life into the tech-demo. For the wide mountains we used a simple trick with the model scales.
Wind turbines and mountains are in reality much smaller 3D models. Coupled with the linear perspective of the overhead power lines the impression of a vast plain terrain with distant forests is given. Thus it was possible to preserve system resources and optimize development time. For the mountains we used customized satellite images which we processed digitally in Photoshop and put together. Subsequently another animation movie from the real-time 3D visualization has been calculated that we could produce without significant additional costs.
We were thus in a state to offer Leadwerks Corporation a quick and inexpensive interactive 3D visualization. Licensees are able to experience the diversity interactively on their computer with our in-house viz-app. It is also possible to achieve the same “look” of the tech-demo using 3d models from our 3D asset store. The Leadwerks Corporation could continue to extract new promotional materials and use the various communication channels for marketing activities.
